Chapter 4 Christmas Present

Zodak’s ears suddenly perked up to hear bells. It wasn’t the clocks bell, it was the sound of either sleigh bells or regular Christmas bells. It had to have been both. He was suddenly blinded by a bright light. He blinked a few winks, trying to get his vision to adjust once more. What stood before him was a wolf. It looked like Pique, though it had different features.

The spirit smiled. “My name is Lorenzo; Spirit of Christmas Present.” He chuckled. “It’s a pleasant surprise to meet you Zodak, but I’m sorry to say that the present won’t be so pleasant itself but it will be a surprise to you.” Without a given chance for Zodak to speak, Lorenzo snapped his fingers and entered Zorro’s and Aya’s house. Zodak smiled as his sights only saw his children.

He chuckled. “They look like they’re having much more fun than ever.” Zorro walked over to the door to see Pique, Cait, and EJ, along with Caitlin’s two younger siblings. Ezzie the black cat and Cole the wolf pup, being no more than a year or two younger than Ezzie and/or Caitlin. They all said hello and gave their good greetings.

Zodak, being unable to hear what the others were speaking, walked closer to the group as they all entered the den.

“So, Zorro, anyone else coming?” Cait asked.

Zorro shook his head. “We’ve invited Vern and he’ll be here pretty soon, so I decided it’d be just the seven of us.” Aya sat next to Cait hugging her. Zorro smiled. “How’s your brother doing?”

Cait smiled. “He’s been doing better, he’s still been taking visits to the doctor and so far they say they’ll have his medication here eventually.” Cait sighed. “I just wish I had the money, but your dad won’t let me or Pique have the money for anything, little known give us a single penny.”

Zorro looked downwards at the ground. “Yeah...I’m really sorry about that you two have to deal with that everyday.”

Cait patted Zorro’s shoulder. “Don’t worry about it, Zorro. It’s perfectly fine. At least most of the charities to the hospital are taking care of the payments they’ve offered.”

Aya placed a paw on Cait’s shoulder and smiled. “At least he’s getting stronger. That’s a good thing.” Cait nodded.

Zodak watched everyone as they all gathered around and after Vern entered the room. He soon saw Aya and Cait go into the kitchen to prepare the dinner.

He turned towards Lorenzo. “Lorenzo...I’d never seen Zorro this happy since...well...”

He looked back on the many times Pique had made his son laugh and smile. Forgetting most of his past, he’d remember the many times he saw Zorro happy, it was all thanks to Pique’s optimistic personality that Zorro’s depression had vanished like it had never even overcame him.

Lorenzo smirked. “Having a change of heart, are we now?” He chuckled. “And here I thought you’d rather disapprove of your son dating another man.”

He gazed over at the scene of Zorro and Pique, cuddling next to each other, smiling, hugging, kissing, laughing, and saying the occasional ”I love you”’s. “But, you seem to be more than grateful that Pique had stolen your son’s heart.”

Zodak sighed and tried to smile. “Guilty as charged, Spirit.”

“Zorro! How about a game of “Yes or No”? It has been a rather long while since we’ve last played that game.” EJ suggested with a smile.

Zorro shrugged as he rose from his seat next to Pique and started the game. “Right now. I’m thinking of a...creature.” He smirked, thinking they’d never guess it.

Pique scratched his chin. “Does it live here at our home?”

Zorro thought for a moment. “Yes.”

EJ crossed his arms and smiles. “Is it an unwanted creature?”

Zorro smile stretched. “Yes.”

“Is it a rat?” Pique asked.

Zorro shook his head. “No.”

Vern snapped his fingers and smiled widely, already knowing the answer. “It’s your father, Old Zodak!”

Zorro clapped his paws. “You got it, Vern!” He laughed a bit.

Zodak frowned. Could his son really hate him that much after what happened? His heart sank deeply towards his stomach.

Pique smiled for a moment, but didn’t laugh. “Hey, even though your father’s an unwanted creature, he’s still a good man either way.”

Zodak’s heart began to lift back into his chest. Pique thought he wasn’t a bad man? Did he really think he was a kind hearted man even though he never once gave him or Cait a paycheck?

“Everyone! Dinner’s ready! Cait called out as everyone hurried into the dining hall. Zodak and Lorenzo followed.

Zorro sat down. “Well, I don’t see why you see my father as a “good man”, darling.” He stated to Pique.

Pique sat down with a smile. “Now even though he’s never really given us the least bit of money, little known a penny, I’m still grateful that I could be able to have this job that he had provided for both me and Cait. One to support our future marriage, Zorro honey. And secondly to help Caitlin support her brothers and sisters.”

Cait nodded and smiled. “Even though I don’t have much money has I had either hoped or wished for, at least it provides us with a hopeful chance of Allana finally being able to be released from the hospital.”

Vern rolled his eyes. “If he was here, I’d give him a piece of my mind at this feast, then give him a slice of turkey and let him choke on it!”

Cait placed a paw on Vern’s shoulder. “Now, Vern. Even though he’s rather uptight about his money, he still provides all he can in the investments and he’s lucky enough to get some help with the payments of Allana’s medical attention.” The lioness rose her glass, filled with a delicious holiday eggnog, as a toast to her’s and Pique’s employer. “Too Zodak.”

Pique smiled and rose his glass, nearly spilling the eggnog, Aya doing the same only spilling a fourth of the eggnog. “To Zodak!” They both cheered.

EJ and Vern, both notch lately rose their cups to a decent height, being less amused by them toasting to Zodak. But they had to do it, not to be rude towards everyone else. “To Zodak.” The uttered in a more than dull tone deepened in their voices.

Zorro rose his glass with a slight smirk spreading across his face. “To my father.”

Ezzie smiled and nodded and rose her glass. “To Zodak.”

Cole rose his glass, with more excitement than anyone would have expected. “To Zoda--” before he could cheer, he coughed heavily.

Cait sat him down on her lap. “Cole, you got excited again.” She held her brother close to her body. “You might need to settle down.”

Cole gripped onto his sister’s sweater and breathed deeply.

Zodak walked towards the two, watching them, their caring brother/sister moment was that of the first Christmas scenery of Mary and baby Jesus. Tears started to swell within his eyes. He turned towards Lorenzo. “Spirit....is there any chance that Cole will be alright and live another day?” He asked in deep concern, he felt that Cait would be more than depressed to watch her brother passing away, he would feel the same if it was Allana.

Lorenzo glared Zodak. “Why would you even bother caring?! If the child dies, let him along with the other family members and decrease the surplus population!” The wolf was flared with anger towards Zodak.

Zodak’s heart sank again. “Oh...I never--”

Lorenzo ceased Zodak. “Yes, but you know now, Zodak.” He looked over at the brother and sister and sighed. “I’m afraid without the care their family truly needs, it will be their last Christmas together.”

Zodak’s ears lowered touching the back of his head. Fearing the worst, he wished to return home to bed and wait for the next spirit. “Lorenzo, I think we’ve seen enough.” Zodak said in a low tone filled with utter sadness and slight depression.

Lorenzo nodded. “I couldn’t agree more. My time is up anyways. I hope and pray that you have a change of heart once the Spirit of Christmas Future shows you what is yet to come.”

Zodak nodded. “Thank you, Lorenzo.”

Lorenzo smirked as he vanished into the fog and returned Zodak home. The old wolf sat on the foot of his bed and sighed. He really hoped that the next spirit would show him the error of his ways.

He looked up at the ceiling. “Spirit...please show me the true error of my ways so that I will change how I am.”

He laid in his bed, starting to feel more guilty than he would’ve known. He never truly felt guilt before. The guilt began to grow stronger and stronger. He sighed heavily and laid in bed as he waited for the next spirit.
Well, Zodak's having a change of heart, but wait until he sees what the future holds.
